Hinckley, Minn., is currently looking for a city administrator. Scandia no longer is.
Kyle Morell, the soon-to-be former administrator in Hinckley was offered and has accepted the Scandia job.
“We think (Morell) is going to be a good fit for Scandia,” Mayor Christine Maefsky said. “He is well-regarded in Hinckley.”
Maefsky feels Morell has a well-rounded familiarity with the types of issues and initiatives the city is facing.
Morell also demonstrated a positive temperament for the role, she said. One example from his experience that swayed her and the Scandia council was his willingness to work with the Minnesota Department of Transportation on amending a highway project near Hinckley.
Morrell has 16 years of experience in government. He previously served the cities of Clara City, Columbia Heights and Inver Grove Heights. Morrell holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Marquette University in Milwaukee, and master’s degrees in public administration and management from Hamline.
The Scandia City Council was set to approve an employment contract with Morell on Tuesday that will offer him a starting wage of $115,000 per year. He will begin work on April 17.
Morell was chosen from a field of 26 applicants, five of whom the city council interviewed on March 10.
The city parted ways with its former administrator Ken Cammilleri late last year. He served as city administrator from October 2019 to December 2022.
Anne Hurlburt, a former city administrator herself, has served as interim since Cammilleri’s departure. She will stay on to help Morell transition into the job for a couple of weeks.
