My husband and I moved to the Forest Lake area five years ago with a two-year-old and new born. As a young family from the cities, we were excited to build a home and start a new life in a new community. We have since had another child and our oldest has started school in the Forest Lake School District. We greatly enjoy the area and have built strong relationships with other families and can feel ourselves laying down roots.

And yet, with all of these positive experiences there is a looming threat, the future of the Forest Lake School District. We have been discouraged to learn the difficulty of passing referendums in the district. At first, we were skeptical and unsupportive ourselves, but that was because we were uninformed. We now think, what will we do if the levy doesn’t pass? Private school, drive to a neighboring district, home school, move, what?

The reality is that the majority of our friends, young and new families in this community, are having these same conversations. It has been overwhelming. Therefore, my message is simple, if we want to encourage new and young families to move here, stay here, and grow an even greater spirit of vibrancy, then please make an effort to vote, and vote yes! If we want to lose young families and alienate new ones from the area, then don’t pass the levy. The consequences will be many and seen through families in the community for years to come.
