For their third consecutive year, the Stillwater Area High School Mountain Bike Team won the Minnesota State Division 1 Mountain Bike Championship Oct. 26-27 in Mankato. If this wasn’t enough of an accomplishment, the team also claimed the highest cumulative points to win the Overall Division 1 Team Championship for the bragging rights of the number one team in the state of Minnesota.
The National Interscholastic Cycling Association has organized programs for 38 states, of which Minnesota claims the 2nd largest with over 1000 athletes. The Stillwater Mountain Bike Team holds a total of 92 riders making them the largest team in the state coached by Bill Smitten.
“This is the team’s seventh year competing and this is our fourth win overall,” said Smitten. “The team had some tough conditions and were up against some great teams, but they pulled through and did a great job.”
Stillwater’s Middle School Mountain Bike Team also won the State Championship Title for their second consecutive win. Because of the victory of both the Middle and High School teams, Stillwater was crowned the Minnesota State High School Cycling League Champions November 2.
