The Marine on St. Croix City Council set a maximum levy September 12 of $1,192,658.60.

If approved, the number would represent a 34.74% increase from last year’s levy.

The figure, which can be reduced but not increased, includes several proposals for new spending outlined below. A public Truth in Taxation meeting will be held the first week in December. An exact date has not been set.

Village Center revitalization

Roadwork downtown will consume the bulk of the $150,000 typically used for road projects. The council added $100,000 for discussion of other potential road improvements.

Picnic shelter

A council member has suggested a picnic shelter for Burris Park, for which $70,000 is listed in the initial levy proposal.

Another $25,000 was earmarked for fencing to screen the porta potty and dumpster at the wayside rest.

Fire department equipment

$60,000 would be needed to replace self-contained breathing apparatuses for the fire department. The fire chief is also seeking alternative sources of funding.
