Interstate 35W will close in both directions between Interstate 94 and Highway 280 in Minneapolis beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12.

Crews will begin closing the ramps for I-35W about one hour before closing the interstate. Motorists will be detoured using Interstate 94 and Highway 280. They can go north on I-35W from Washington Avenue.

Crews will work 24-hours-a-day during the closure resurfacing the freeway between Portland and Washington Avenues.

The closure of I-35W will affect access between I-35W and downtown Minneapolis. Motorists should plan ahead and give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.

The work from Washington to Portland includes resurfacing of lanes, median work, drainage improvements and repairs to 11 ramps that connect to I-35W. It is expected to be complete in October.

Most of the work will happen on weekends or overnight. Some ramps will be closed for up to 10 days. MnDOT plans a second weekend full closure in September to complete the resurfacing.

This work is part of the larger four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. For the work between Portland and Washington, crews will resurface the freeway and repair 11 ramps that connect to I-35W.
